We (husband and wife) moved to Rutland County as fresh blue belts and quickly realized that there were no dedicated bjj gyms within 1 hour in any direction. After talking it over with our instructor and with his blessing, we decided to open a small club on Route 4.

Fast forward 5 years and the color of our belts has changed along with a bigger and better room to train in. To put icing on the cake; a world class black belt (from Texas) decided to move to Rutland and join our team as an instructor.

The original dream has come true: we have an amazing training space, and with our first generation of colored belts, we have even better training partners than we could have imagined.

The new dream is to run Rutland's best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy. That is where American Jiu Jitsu comes in. Seeing how I am a Nicaraguan Married to a Cuban (both born in the USA) who both learned Jiu Jitsu from a Puerto Rican who learned it from a Brazilian; it only felt natural to take a name that represented the spirit of our lineage.

Upon further investigation it also became evident that Jiu Jitsu arrived (from Japan) in Brazil and the USA at a similar time. It happened to be that a certain Gracie family, who had both the motivation and the means, created what would eventually become the UFC and showcased the product of their style of training. This family hijacked the art or jiu jitsu and claims it as their own. We do not take any credit away from the Gracies, but we do not want to bow to a picture of someone's grandpa in our own academy. In that spirit, we follow the lead of spearheads in reclaiming the art like Jake Shields and Keenan Cornelius and promoting our own style of Jiu Jitsu: Rutland American Jiu Jitsu.

The great Theodore Roosevelt said it best in 1905: "The art of Jiu Jitsu is worth more in every way than all of our athletics combined".

For someone with a busy life is always easy to find a reason not to train. I have found that for myself and many others building training into our lifestyle is the way that we are able to make progress and get closer to our goals.

We have to ask ourselves why we are here, some folks want to compete, some want to fight mma and some just want to improve our skills while staying active. Whatever the reason choosing even one night or morning per week (we recommend 2 or 3 days per week) could be enough to change your life forever.

Joining a Jiu Jitsu academy and completely changing my lifestyle nearly a decade ago was one of the best decisions that I ever made. It has enriched my life in countless ways and I am passionate about sharing that success with others.
